A beautiful PDF is not a system. Neither is a Figma file nobody can find in three months. When you hire for brand identity or Web3 branding, you are buying decision-making under uncertainty — not wallpaper.
Ask for the handoff, not just the hero
Request examples of component libraries, token usage, and how non-designers update social templates. If the answer is always "we will train you later," keep digging. Training matters, but the artifacts need to survive turnover.
Ask how they handle product overlap
If your studio only touches marketing while product lives elsewhere, you will pay twice to reconcile mismatches. Ask whether they collaborate with product designers, and how they document UI patterns versus campaign layouts.
Time zone and language reality
For GCC headquarters hiring Morocco- or Europe-based studios, ask about overlap hours, review cadence, and Arabic/RTL experience if your product ships bilingually. Process answers tell you more than portfolio glamour shots.
Commercial clarity
Fixed phases beat mystery retainers for most identity programs. You should know what "done" means for each milestone: discovery, direction, system, and rollout support.
Red flags we would avoid
- No named owner for your account. - No critique of your current constraints — everything is "easy." - No plan for engineering handoff if you build in React or native stacks.
